Different Types of Twitter Users

There are three main types of Twitter users, but sometimes the groups overlap with each other.

The Different Types of Twitter Users

There are over two hundred million people on Twitter (according to Alexa traffic stats), of all different types, and it seems to be one of the fastest growing sites in the world.

In the last two years, (2009-2011), the number of Twitter users has increased by almost 1000%, and in this article, I will try to explain the different types of Twitter users, and why they are using the site. I think I can group them into three distinct and very different types.

The Social Tweeter

This type of Twitter user is mainly there to keep in touch with friends and family. They may tweet from their mobile phone, and receive tweets via sms of what their friends are doing.

Sometimes they will follow other people they have an interest in, like celebrities, and sometimes this type of Twitter user is also using the site for business, but keeps the friend tweets separate.

A lot of people have only just joined the site because they heard about it on TV, and want to see what all the fuss is about. Often they are quite disappointed, and barely use the site at all, because they prefer to use Facebook to stay in touch with friends and family.

The Celebrity Follower

This type of Twitter user does not post many tweets of their own, as they don't have many followers to tweet to. They are mainly there to see what the big stars are tweeting about, but often they may get confused, and think they are following Justin Beiber when there are about 100,000 Twitter users calling themselves Justin Beiber or Lady Gaga. Don't ask me how you find the real account, I guess there's probably no links being posted.

Business Tweeters

This type of Twitter user is a website owner, blogger, article writer, or affilate marketer, who aims to get tons of traffic by posting links all day, and constantly building their follower list.

There are hundreds of different websites that help you to gain followers, see who is following you, manage multiple twitter accounts, and hopefully build a huge audience for your tweets, and I talk about that in: how do you use Twitter to get page views?

Personally, I'm the type of Twitter user who uses the site to get views on articles like this one, and so far I've got over 7,000 followers, and getting more every day. It's not as simple as it first seems to do that quickly, so check out the article above if you want to be a business type of Twitter user.
